Studying Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
A Study Day brings together a group of people to concentrate on one work or issue from the conductor's perspective.
The idea is to approach a work or an aspect of the conductor's job entirely from the conductor's point of view. It is both a practical and an intellectual exercise. It is not an analysis class, although analysis comes into it. It isn't a conducting lesson, although you will learn a lot about conducting and have a chance to conduct (usually with piano). the experience is very intense and tiring!
Students sometime ask whether they should attend as an observer or participant. Generally speaking, if you are a beginner conductor, it is better to attend as an observer. Although you will not have a chance to conduct, you will gain a great deal of insight and information. However, because of the intensive nature of the day, there is very little opportunity to deal issues of baton technique.
The maximum number of participating students for Study Days is 10. The maximum for other one-day courses will vary. Note: Fees for study days vary because of varying student numbers and costs.
Study Days can take place either at the Olney Centre or at Michael Rose's home (as pictured).
